i finally found it. its the following to rpms:
pam-0.75-19.i386.rpm
pam-devel-0.75-19.i386.rpm

the funny thing is that pam-0.75-19.i386.rpm is NOT on the support page of 
security fixes, erratas, and enhancements. i found it first on a mirror, then 
when back and did a search on redhat and there it was. and the problem is 
fixed.
