I'm about to embark down this road. So here's what I've found thus far.

Yes, you need to rebuild the kernel to include support for freeswan's 
ipsec.  This is actually quite a straight forward process, as IMHO, the 
instructions for freeswan are quite good.  I believe there is an option to 
create your own rpm's to install on a seperate system. This is what I'll 
be focusing on.  Also the freeswan users mail list quite active and 
chucka-block full of interesting reading.

Yes there are rpm's available.  Sorry don't know where, but I have seen 
them.  I suspect judicious searching on your favorite search engine will 
illicit some responses.

I'm surprised Trond hasn't chimed in with CIPE, which apparently comes 
with RH 7.2 preconfigured.  Haven't used it myself.
