/etc/X11/applnk seems to be just "X" apps that are not specific to a desktop 
environment.

/usr/share/applnk is for the KDE specific set of links.

Good luck on that one. If you find something, let me know. I think the 
development of KDE is far outpacing anyone's ability to document it.
