I got to modify code that has a timestamp put in a varchar field, and the guy 
does the order by on that field. The worst part is that he had to do some 
outside coding to build the CURRENT_TIMESTAMP or now() that is already in the 
SQL engine.
The normal MySQL programmers I know do these kind of things normally. Just a 
pity. :-(
