My last attempt to get answers was maybe too long. Let's shorten it up.

I have possibly done a mis-upgrade from RedHat 7.0 to 7.2 on a dual boot
system that has Win98 on the other partition and was originally
partitioned for Linux using Partition Magic, which I have now removed
from the system. (Read my other messages if you want the details)

I can boot from a boot floppy. But I've been unable to boot with Grub
(booted from a floppy) and am unwilling to try to run either Grub or
LILO to load the partitioning info to the MBR because I am afraid of
losing the still-good boot to Windows.

When I run grub and then boot from it, a few lines scroll by on the
screen terminating in

mxt_scan_bios: enter

after which the machine is hard-frozen and must be turned off to be
rebooted. No disk sounds are heard before this happens.

1) Can anyone tell me what the mxt_scan_bios: enter line means?

2) During the upgrade, I got this message:
"Unable to align partition properly. This probably means that another
partitioning tool generated an incorrect partition table, because it
didn't have the correct BIOS geometry. It is safe to ignore but
ignoring may cause (fixable) problems with some boot loaders."

Can anyone explain what these "fixable" problems are and more
importantly, how to fix them?

3) Can anyone tell me what the RedHat installer does when you say you
want Grub to be your boot loader (and how to achieve the same results
outside of the installer)?
