This is trick. The idea is to avoid looking up these hosts in the DNS
by finding them in /etc/hosts first. And as a consequence you end up
consulting IP address 127.0.0.1 for these sites instead of the real
thing. And 127.0.0.1 is your own host, which naturally supplies nothing
(either by not running a web server, or by not having whatever is requested
on that web server).
