It is frequently true that what is the optimum location for data is
not a convenient location for the human or the system.  Symbolic links
allow as many paths of access to data as you find convenient, and also
provide device independence for filesystems, allowing you to place
data where there is room for it, and place a pointer to it where users
(or the system) expect it to be.

If you're familiar with Microsoft Windows, you may consider symlinks
roughly analogous to shortcuts.  However, Windows shortcuts are not as
flexible as Unix symlinks.  Windows shortcuts are exclusively for the
human interface; system processes will not transparently follow them
to a target.
