Does the smartstart partition still exist, or was it overwritten by the 
install?

In the past, I had a few Compaq Prolineas and experienced the same 
problem. The only way I was able to get it working was to use a floppy 
containing the compaq tools. I didn't try to find another solution once I 
discovered that Compaq had the floppy images available.
