Depending on updates to Ximian gnome libs, developer snapshots, etc,
there can be problems with Nautilus spawning extra processes that can
drag down performance. Sometimes Netscape and mozilla can get "stuck"
and require killing by hand, etc. There are probably a few others too.
If you read some of the FAQs on the Ximian site, they mention a special
kill script for Nautilus, as well as how to re-run their little
configuration wizard. You could try switching back from Nautilus to
gmc, then see how performance feels.

Have you run the RedCarpet tool and checked for updates to Ximian and
your distribution?

There are also some goofy things in early RedHat 7.x releases. Try
upgrading to 7.2 (if you run RedHat).
