ext2 on 2.4.x kernel (rh 7.1/7.2) can handle files bigger than 4gb. I use mysql with 10gb index files on a similar configuration. The only problem i've encountered is with perl from the original rpm package that does not handle such files (mysqlhotcopy is a perl script).
