Really? That's odd, I'd have expected the install to need the latest rpm.
Did the install finish cleanly? Have you tried rpm --rebuilddb?

What version of rpm do you have installed?

I believe this is a complaint that it needs a newer version of rpm 
installed. Sort of a nasty catch-22, eh? ;)
