I had grub installed to MBR. When starting the machine after a s2d, grubs 
starts up no matter what as somebody pointed out. There is basically two 
options, either move grub to the start of the /boot partition or add an entry 
in grub.conf. I know what needs to be added in lilo, but I couldn't get grub 
to work.
        The problems was "solved", since I wanted to mount my laptop on the  
network at work. Because of some rather strange requirements I ended up with 
reinstalling redhat 7.2.  At least, backup was pretty fast with a 100MB 
line:-)
