I've done this here for some time and it works well.

My webserver is on the internal network with a private ip address.
- From outside, the firewall NAT rules pass the traffic with no problem.

Internally, however, trying to connect to www.tuxfan.homeip.net would 
fail. In /etc/hosts, I had this line:
192.168.0.8     enigma.local            enigma

I added this line:
192.168.0.8     www.tuxfan.homeip.net   enigma

I could have done it via the firewall or my internal dns as well, I 
suppose, but this was quick and easy.
