Hey all:

I too have not had a single laggy pop since about 10 PM today. I am
popping my internal RH 6.2 server with 3 windows machines and 2
RH 7.2 machines. All the windows machines were taking way more time than
usual to pop, ftp, telnet, and Samba. I could not reach my
samba shares on my 2 RH 6.2 systems yesterday. I spent yesterday
checking my 2 hubs and cable ends. Also rebuilt the data base in 2
RH 6.2 machines with rpm --rebuilddb. I have stopped my firewall
totally and just forwarded packets and it made no difference. I have
rebooted both machines. I stayed up till 3 AM (EST) just to make sure
I did not miss something. I worked 12 hours today and got home around
10 PM tonight and everything had cleared up. Samba shares are now
reachable. The only log entries that gave me any clues were the
messages from /var/log/maillog and that was a consistent over one
minute timeout from the pop3 connect to the actual login. Only upping
the timeout would stop this from occurring. I ran "top" while I was
poping, ftping, telneting and there was no noticeable load on the
machine. Note this was only going from my lanned windows machines to
either of my RH 6.2 servers on a simple home network. My RH 7.2
machines had absolutely no problem accessing these machines. This
is all so coincidental with others from this list. I wish we could
find an explanation but I am not going to beat my head in to find the
answer like I used to when I was operating my own ISP. My family
fortunately will not call me complaining about slow internet access.
They just know that Dad's working on it ;-).

I have no answer to this but all is well now. I still believe this
to be a windows problem but do not know what or how it seemed to
remedy itself in 1 day.

Very Odd,

Eddie Strohmier
