> David, stupid question I know, but what sound card was it?

No, it is not a stupid question at all. I must admit I left out a lot of
details when I posed the question. I am running Redhat 7.1 on my laptop
which uses a Crystal WDM sound chip. I am not able to recall the exact model
number of the chip. It uses the i810_audio driver.

I am using headphones as the built-in speakers are lousy.

Another important detail is that I am trying to play mp3 in the console
using mpg123. All sounds are OK in KDE.

There is only one output headphone jack on my laptop. The other 2 jacks are
for input, microphone and line-in.

It's OK.

As of now, I have solved the problem using the console mixer, aumix, as
recommended by Statux.

Thanks,
David
