I suggest you take a look in /usr/share/doc/samba*/docs/textdocs (or
/usr/doc/samba*/docs/textdocs, depending on where the docs are on your
system) and read thru the file DIAGNOSIS.txt. It goes through a series
of steps to help find out what is or isn't working in your Samba
configuration. 

I've found it invaluable in making my household LAN work, since there are
lots of things I don't understand about Windoze networking and therefore
I NEED a cookbook like this.
