I suggest you take a look in /usr/share/doc/samba*/docs/textdocs (or /usr/doc/samba*/docs/textdocs, depending on where the docs are on your system) and read thru the file DIAGNOSIS.txt. It goes through a series of steps to help find out what is or isn't working in your Samba configuration.
