Hi Chas It sounds like a resolution issue me. I found the same problem and being to lazy to figure out what to do with vnc, changed the resolution on the vncserver to 800x600 and then was able to see the whole screen on my computer. The dispaly was slightly smaller than the my 768x1024 display on my computer.
