An email monitor a program which constantly polls pop3 or imap for the arrival of new 
email messages. If a new email message arrives the "email monitor" lets you now by 
some action on the screen. 

I was wondering if there is one of those for gnome.

I get your point, but after a while I get bored and simply throw all emails away. If I 
had a monitor i'd be much more efficient.
