my best guess would be to specify a different directory in the ./configure
script (providing there is one).  try typing "./configure - h" in the
install directory and find what options you'd have to include to change the
install dir.  it'd be something like "./configure --prefix=DIRECTORY" the
default being "/usr/local".  if there is no ./configure script... i'm afraid
i'm still too much of a newbie myself to help you.
