When the system comes up wit just "LI", it is a problem with the master boot
record (MBR) of the machine. Generally speaking, this only happens on a
dual boot machine. It happens because MS Windows likes to do funky things
to the MBR.

In the old days (DOS - Win95), when this would happen, you would use the DOS
fdisk utility to fix the problem - "DOS /MBR" ... This was an undocumented
switch to fdisk that would repair the MBR of the primary HD.

You would then need to reboot the machine, and boot linux using the boot
floppy. After linux was up & running, make sure lilo.conf is as it should
be and the run /sbin/lilo.

I don't know if this works with the newer OS's, as I haven't made a dual
boot machine since Win95....

Subject: System is hanging with 'LI' only showing

We just installed several RH 7.2 machines and a handfull of them have
the following problem:

When the system boots it hangs when LILO is supposed to appear. All we
see is 'LI' and then nothing.

I tried using a dos boot disk with 'fdisk /mbr'
I then tried booting from a RH 7.2 boot disk and running lilo again but
it still hangs.

We did about 250 nodes and the same image was used for all, we have maybe
7-8 that have this problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
CC
