Change

x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

to

x:3:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

in /etc/inittab to get it to run in runlevel 3.  You might also remove the
"-nodaemon".

If you're using gdm, you also need to set 

Enable=true 

under the [xdmcp] section of /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf

This is all from memory, so it may not be entirely accurate, but give it a
try.
