Sounds like sendmail is stuck on a message for some reason.  (or the email
is so large that it is tying up your entire system) Did you try restarting
the sendmail process?  

#/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail restart

to see if that cures the problem? I haven't had that happen here, but it
is a possibility. (Have you checked for disk space with df -h ?)

You can also check the output of 

#mailq

to see what is sitting in the queue.

Yeah, that's how science works.  Pose a theory ***based on all available
knowledge*** and try to disprove it. The process of disproving it gives us
new knowledge.  That's how science advances.  What's the point?
