A few questions:

You say that when you are using the Gnome xdm, that you are not able to
login.  Is this just with NIS accounts, or is it with local accounts as
well?

If you switch to init 3 (or Ctrl-Alt-F1), are you able to login via
NIS/local account then?

Does the log messages say anything about the failed attempts?

My guess is that it might have something to do with PAM authentication.  I
found out (the hard way), that Redhat loves to rely heavily on
PAM.  Usually, if a service (such as ssh, telnet, login, etc) uses PAM, it
needs a pam script that is located in the /etc/pam.d directory.

Also, what does your /etc/nsswitch.conf file look like?
