The answer partially depends on how you connect to the Internet. If you've
got DSL or Cable Modem - ie, Ethernet connectivity - then the best approach
is to buy a 4-port Linksys DSL/Cable "router". These provide for basic
firewalling and NAT functionality and will allow your wife's computer to
connect to Internet when you've broken your own system.

I personally did this a year ago and it's saved me a lot of headaches. I now
have the ability to do whatever I want with my system and my wife can still
surf and read e-mail. For the $70 or so you pay for the Linksys, it's a
bargain compared to having a p'd off wife (I've been married 23 years, so I've
got experience in this!).

The basic approach is that the Linksys acts as a DHCP client and gets your WAN
address from the ISP. You then either statically assign your own addresses on
a private network or let the Linksys act as a DHCP server. It's trivial to set
up.

You can substitute any number of boxes that are similar to the Linksys. ie,
SMC, Netgear, UGate, etc.
