Hi there, i had the same problem but did have a hostname set on the machine. Sendmail would take ages to start then not start at all. I do not know if it helps but this happened on several machines using RH7.2 but only when KDE2.2 was installed as well. Also, KDE behaved very strangely on these machines. When sendmail was removed all went back to normal.
