He's telnetting through the POP3 port, not the telnet port, so firewall
restrictions on telnet do not apply. Besides, he's gets connected and gets
responses from the POP3 server. It's just that the responses indicate an
authentication problem.

Re-reading that paragraph, it seems the server is APOP-capable. He might
try setting fetchmail for APOP instead of POP3, even if he already tried
APOP with KMail.
