This looks to me to indicate that the CD is not terminated properly, unless
you really have devices on SCSI ID's 1-7 (and 7 is usually the scsi card).
Its either a bad card, bad mobo or incorrectly terminated device in my
opinion.

I can only give limited advice as I have always used atapi cd writers -
having said that

char major is definitely a red herring - in my experience as soon as you
recompile this gives an error which I have yet to see cause any
problems.

What does lsmod say?

If you have a proper scsi device the comment about atpi devices should
probably be investigated
