A different monitor does the same thing.

I run an AverView 78ie, which has a degausing function. I looked into this
but 
this is not the likely cause because as above: Win 98 does not give the
problem.

I have a Trident 3DImage 9750 (AGP) graphics card.
Maybe there is some incompatibility with the X windows software?
