It's available with the 2.2.x kernel series and later.

One important thing to remember - software raid is *NOT* a backup in the 
traditional sense and should not be used as one.  It provides redundancy in 
the event of a disk failure, not archival backups.  Files that are deleted 
(intentionally or otherwise) on one drive will also be deleted on the other 
drive.
