I apologize, this is a Debian problem that I found a solution to, but it
was through the help of Mark Knipfer's Red Hat 7.0 problem that i figured
this out. I am running the latest Debian iso, as of May 1st 2001.. and I
too was having GPM problems.. gpm would sporadically lock up the keyboard on console
logins,
as well as Xwindows on some occasions. However, by disabling USB on my
motherboard, an 'Award BIOS v6.0' , the problem resolved itself. how
strange.

at any rate, if u find yourself with gpm hangs, keyboard lockups.. and
trying every variant of mouse types in your gpm.conf and XF86Config..
disable USB and make your linux life a whole lot easier.
