If this works:

[hal@feenix hal]$ xdpyinfo |grep RENDER
    RENDER

then X should have what it needs. If not, then it is just not
available for your card. You can also try 

 xterm -fa fixed

and look at it closely with xmag to see the AA itself (only works with
xterm). If this works, then the problem is within KDE/QT somewhere.
