Subject: [OT]Programming Theory

I am trying to learn how to program more effectively
in scripting languages
and have come the the conclusion that I have no
experience with theory. Does
anyone know of a good book that would cover
programming theory from
analyzing the problems or steps required to laying out
your code? I would
like to find a book that covers the theories and
concepts and is applicable
to java, php, perl and bash shell scripting. Does
anyone know of such a
book?

Thanks, Chad
