Network connection is okay, I have connections to nfs disks that never
falter.
I tried pings anf they all reply at acceptable times.
The only thing I can think of is that it is routing related ??? I am pretty
poor on routing.... but then again how could I get the connection in the
first place?????????/

This sounds like a connectivity problem, not a configuration problem.
Network card flaking out? Bad cable? Could be something that simple
...
Have you tried other protocols (e.g., ssh)? Maybe let a ping run in
the background and watch for dropped packets for a few minutes?
