How long did you wait before desiding the system was frozen?  The first
time you boot, it seams to take a bit longer...  It is also possible
that there is something waiting for keyboard input, instead of talking
to the serial consile like it should.  Give it 5 minutes to work things
out, before giving up on the system.

If waiting does not get the system to boot, you can try booting in the
single user mode (if lilo is set up to use the serial console).  You can
then disable linuxconf and see if it is the problem.  I normaly get
rid of linuxconf anyway...
