Well, what you can do, is to edit the file manually ( or copy the
modules.dep from your previous kernel directory, ie
/lib/modules/x.x.x/modules.dep to /lib/modules/2.4.3/ ) and make the
necessary changes. Also, there is a difference in the paths where the
modules are located from the 2.4.x kernel onwards. Now, depending on the
modules that you need loaded, you have to add the following lines to your
/etc/modules.conf after the "keep" originally present in the file;
path[net]=/lib/modules/2.4.2/kernel/drivers/net
path[cdrom]=/lib/modules/2.4.2/kernel/drivers/cdrom
path[sound]=/lib/modules/2.4.2/kernel/drivers/sound
path[ide]=/lib/modules/2.4.2/kernel/drivers/ide
and so for all the other modules that you want loaded. In most cases, the
modules will exist as sub-directories of the above directories, so copy
all the necessary modules to the above directories after updating you
/etc/modules.conf (The above listing shows 2.4.2 because that's the kernel
that I use) and for a full listing of the devices available like net,
cdrom etc see
man modules.conf
