Sorry Bret. That is what happens when one runs too many distributiions. 
'update-rc.d <filename> defaults' belongs to debian. It is used to update
those files you create in the /etc/init.d directory.   It writes up all the 
sym links etc., for you so it is kind-a neat. But I see RedHat uses a 
different method but similar. I guess they are all about the same but they 
are painted a different color, eh?
