printer problems

Ok, this is the output I get when restarting the printer deamon:

Starting lpd: Warning-'if' filter '/var/spool/lpd/filter does not have
executive perms.

Any ideas?

I've tried both 
chmod -x filter and chmod 755 filter, both to no avail.

Possible a bug in 2.4.3?  (What I'm running)
