You should really keep any packages that are installed, updated. The
best way I know to do this is subscribe to redhat-watch. Then you get
notices of new packages and vulnerabilities. Or run something like
'up2date'. All this stuff we are talking about now has been 'fixed'
for many months. wu-ftp I think was last summer in fact.
It is unlikely that the firewalling software (ipchains?), is going to
be a source of problems, unless you consider a misconfiguration.
