ipalias help needed

i am trying to change the appearance of my ip when on IRC.  i was told that
in order to do this i would need ipalias.  i'm a newbie to linux so anyhelp
anyone could offer would be great.  i'm trying to learn so even if you can
fill me in on what i need to study or do i would appreciate it
