Sure, i have on my machine 2.2.16 and 2.4.0

That's correct, you choose which one to load, when
LILO prompt you

I'm not any expert or something, but so far i haven't
had any problem having two kernels on my machine

That's what i did with 2.4.0., the 2.2.16 was the one
that came with the distro, but i wanted to try 2.4.0,
because it has support for the C-Media Audio device,
so i got the 2.4.0 source, and compile it selecting
what to include as a built in, and what as a module,
you can use strictly what you need, and get a pretty
small kernel.

you can do this too, i recommend you read the Kernel
How-To, plus there is a very interesting article about
this in the maximum linux magazine, i don't know what
number of issue was, but is the one from nov-dec.
the basic thing is (at least what i did on my
machine):
- Read the Kernel HOWTO
- download the source for your kind of machine
- untar the package (at least READ THE INSTALL &
README files)
- compile it (after this process you'll get a bzImage)
- put this bzImage file in your "/"
- and a ln -s to this bzImage in your /boot
- edit yout lilo.conf file
- DO /sbin/lilo (<---THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!)
- reboot
- AND ENJOY ;)
good luck!
