The answer to both questions is yes you can mount mac hfs hard disks from
linux, but ( there's always a but right ? ) you have to compile support for
mac hfs disks into the kernel, and install the hfs utilities.

That depends on whats on it. If it's already in hfs format then no. If you
just want to overwrite anything already, and you're happy with the existing
partitions on the drive, then just use the hfs utilities mentioned above,
and run mkfs -t hfs /dev/hd* for the partitions you'd like formatted as
macintosh hfs plus (replacing the * with the partition number).
