Greetings. We're running Redhat linux 6.2 on a number of x86 systems
around here. Somebody reported to me some difficulties with the handling
of keyboard interrrupts (^C, ^Z) in the mail program, which is associated
with the mailx RPM. The systems in question are all running
mailx-8.1.1-16, which is the most-recent update I've been able to find at
the Redhat FTP site.

I thought that the problem might be solved in a later version of mailx, so
I looked for an updated mailx package. It appears that version 8.1.1-20 is
the current version, and that's what ships with Redhat 7.0.

I downloaded the 8.1.1-20 source RPM from the Redhat 7 FTP site and built
an RPM from it. I installed from that, and indeed, the problem seems to
have been fixed in this version.

That would be the happy ending to the story, except that we have a patched,
online distribution of Redhat 6.2, and there is trouble with it. In
particular, I put the newly created mailx-8.1.1-20.i386.rpm into:

        .../RedHat/RPMS

and then attempted to update the package list for that distribution:

[root@zzzz utils]# ./genhdlist /redhat/6.2
only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM

I'm not sure what "major numbers" the message refers to, but I'm guessing
that this may be related to our recent upgrade to rpm-4.0.2-6x on the
system where we keep the distribution.

This is not exactly a life-threatening issue, but it would be nice to be
able to include the improved mailx in our distribution.

I would welcome suggestions as to how to proceed here. (Yes, I suppose
that waiting for Redhat 7.1 is one obvious choice.)

Thanks.

                                        - Mike
