why not just develop a new instant messaging standard? in simply displace the
bumblers? I'm not smart enough to do this but what if....

The clients were free. and the server code was licensed pretty cheap, and use a
distributed architecture so that massive central servers weren't needed for all of the
data. a loose messaging napster if you will. or you could make the servers slightly
beefier(meaning more power and a few central servers), and put on an evil banner ad
or two on occasion? AND if you made it so people couldn't harvest the ID's thus
eliminating the SPAM factor of ICQ... wouldn't that be a good thing?

people could change from the EVIL messaging systems to the new one?

btw, if this is suddenly news to somebody and they do it. I want a cut. :) LOL
