The "highlight, Edit->Copy, highlight, Edit->Paste" procedure works just
like it does in Windows if both apps have those functions. I copy URLs from
Balsa into Netscape like this without problems. It works between GNOME,
Motif, and Tcl/Tk apps, but not with KDE apps.

The middle mouse trick is just not the best method if you're trying to
replace text.
