eesh (enlightenment) can do popups, too ... I'm sure there are lots
more ways to do this than I know about. As an interesting
alternative, how about licq? It's very useful for intra-office
communications, even though it seems conceptually silly to use a
distant messaging server to reach someone in the same building.

It's unwise to make recommendations without knowing your database
needs, but MySQL works great for us, and can certainly handle anything
Access can do. Web interfaces for it are easy to find or build.
