I don't run sendmail any more but my understanding is that sendmail has
the functionality you're looking for built in. Here are some references:

In my case I do the pop-before-smtp using postfix and this script:
http://people.oven.com/bet/pop-before-smtp/pop-before-smtp-1.28.tar.gz
It works great for me but I run postfix and not sendmail! :-)
