I need some help. I upgraded the HelixCode (now Ximian) desktop
yesterday, and after a simple reboot I couldn't log in again using my
regular user account. I could log in using other accounts though. This
is the message I saw in the /var/log/messages file:
Mar 18 12:35:03 localhost gdm[795]: gdm_auth_user_remove: /home/nitebirdz is not owned
by uid 0.
Mar 18 12:35:03 localhost gdm[795]: gdm_auth_user_remove: Ignoring suspiciously
looking cookie file /home/nitebirdz/.Xauthority
If I edit the /etc/sysconfig/desktop file to use kdm instead of gdm it
seems to work, but I still experience problems with Gnome. The system
appears to freeze, and the logs display the following error message:
Mar 18 07:45:24 localhost PAM_pwdb[1184]: (su) session opened for user jortega by
nitebirdz(uid=501)
Mar 18 07:45:29 localhost PAM_pwdb[1205]: (su) session opened for user jortega by
nitebirdz(uid=501)
Mar 18 07:47:33 localhost kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout
: pid 23803, scsi0, channel 0, id 2, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
Mar 18 07:47:43 localhost kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout

: pid 23800, scsi0, channel 0, id 2, lun 0 Read Capacity 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
I understand this looks like a hardware problem, but here is the kicker.
If I log out and use only kdm and KDE, then I experience no problem
whatsoever. The errors only appear when I use _either_ gdm or Gnome or
both.
Any ideas? Any chances this may be related to the gnome-name-server?
I did a few searches, and found a few other instances of people with
the same problem but no solutions at all. The thing is I like Gnome
way better than KDE, so could anyone reply with some ideas please?
Here is some additional information:
