As one who has been known to spend entire afternoons debugging printer
problems, only to discover that the printer cable was not connected,
I've learned to start with the simple basics.  ;)

127.0.0.1 is used for all sorts of internal communications.  Breaking
it can break lots of weird things; I wouldn't be surprised if it
caused you problems with X, too.
