I have two HD's
/dev/hda and /dev/hdd. HDA consists of two partitions; a FAT acting
as a WinNT system disk and an NTFS for file storage. HDD is a RedHat
Linux 6.0 installation on an Intel PIII-450 mHz.
Problem #1:
LILO is intalled in the boot record of HDD and I tried to refer to it using
bootpart (http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm).
The NTLDR still resides in the MBR of HDA. When I try to load Linux
from the NTLDR boot menu I get an L and a bunch of 07's across the screen.
According to the docs this indicates an
"Invalid
initialization" and "The BIOS failed to properly initialize the disk
controller. You should control the BIOS setup parameters. A warm
boot might help too."
Further to that,
when I first ran stuck LILO in hdd's MBR I got a warning stating that
"BIOS drive 0x82 may
not be accessible".
I added a line to
LILO telling it that /dev/hdd was at 0x82.
When I ran LILO this
time, I got
"Warning: /dev/hdd
is not on the first disk"
and the 07's
persisted on the next boot.
How can I boot Linux
from the HD? I can start it with a floppy, but it is SOOOOOOOOO
SLOOOOOOOOOOOWWW!!!! Is there some other loader that will help me out
here, or perhaps I just need to specify a few more options in the
lilo.conf? Maybe if I "control the BIOS setup parameters" (whatever that
means) this will work>
Problem #2: I
have a Yamaha DS-XG sound card. I downloaded, configured, compiled and
installed the drivers (ALSA-project) and they work, mostly. When I first
start GNOME, I have to open the gmixer before I can hear anything. Also,
my CD player stops at the end of a song, any song, the first, last, fourth, what
have you? That is annoying. How can I get it to keep playing until
the cd is finished?
Cheers,
Rob
