You do not realy want to change the xterms to TERM=linux.  The reasion
for the TERM varable is to define the terminal capabilitys, as well as
the secquences to do varius functions.  It also describes the function
key secquesnces.  This is also the reasion for having a kterm entry -
that way you can use the capabilitys built into kterm that are different
from a standard xterm, or the Linux console.

One big difference between an xterm, and a Virtual console is that an
xterminal can be resized to different sizes.  The console only have a
fixed set of resulations.

The TERM varable is being used for what it was designed for.
